INTERVIEWING AN INTERN
The following list outlines some helpful internship interview questions:
- What is your major and how does it relate to our current internship program?
- How did you hear about this internship program?
- Are you planning to receive credit for your internship?
- If yes, how many hours do you need to complete for credit?
- Do you need to complete any special projects for the internship?
- For example, do they need to write a paper, do an interview, provide a summary of duties?
- Do you require a paid internship?
- Specify the pay parameters up front with the student.
- Will you be taking classes or working in addition to your internship?
- If yes, how many days and hours can you dedicate to our internship program?
- What are some of your expectations in regards to the internship program?
- What are you looking to gain from an internship? (Job, experience, connections, etc.)
- When are you graduating?
- What are your goals beyond graduation? (Continuing education, travel, working)
- What would you say is your greatest accomplishment to date?
- What are some of your strengths and weaknesses?
- Clarify some of the key elements that you are looking for in an intern:
- Detail oriented, person who can work independently, good communication skills...
- Clarify available start and end dates.
- Confirm their last day and when the semester starts again. The fall semester can start as early as August. It’s best to clarify.
- Do they have any references and when is the best time to reach them.
- If they are interning in marketing, advertising or PR, do they have any writing samples?
- Are you planning to take any time off during the semester?
- Sometimes students forget to mention if they are taking time off for spring break during their semester.
- Review your expectations!
- You expect them to be on-time, be professional, limited cell phone use, follow policies and procedures like all employees.
- If you are pleased with the interview and would like to offer the student the internship, you may do so at this time or wait for additional candidates. If you decide to offer the internship at that time, review the following:
- Review dress codes, timesheet maintenance, security and procedures to sign-in and out of the office.
- Review online restrictions (Facebook, YouTube etc)
- Interns typically work standard business hours and do not receive a security Fob.
- Students should sign in and sign out at the front desk
- Review the amount of time approved for lunch and breaks.
- Review any procedures for lateness or a sick day.
